What the vehicle is reporting now

Live-Data Vehicle Diagnostics

Looking beyond stored codes to analyse sensor values, module inputs and how requested operation compares with actual behaviour.

Why live data matters

Live-data diagnostics show what a vehicle’s sensors and control modules are reporting while the system is operating. Sunderland Vehicle Diagnostics uses relevant live values during mobile fault finding across Sunderland and nearby areas. This can help determine whether readings are plausible, whether they change correctly and whether the system is achieving what has been requested.

Live data is not self-interpreting. A displayed value must be understood in the context of the vehicle, operating state, measurement units and symptom. A value that looks unusual may be a genuine condition, a sensor or circuit problem, a substituted default or simply normal for that moment.

Examples of useful live values

  • engine or wheel speed (RPM);
  • temperatures and pressure values;
  • battery or module voltage;
  • switch, pedal and actuator status;
  • module inputs and calculated values;
  • requested versus actual position or pressure;
  • sensor values compared with one another; and
  • communication or enable status during a fault.

Sensor plausibility and comparison

Some of the strongest clues come from comparison. Temperature sensors on a cold vehicle may be expected to begin near ambient conditions. Multiple wheel speeds should behave consistently. A requested value can be compared with the actual response. Voltage during cranking may be considered alongside module behaviour. These relationships can point toward the next test without guessing at a part.

Live data is one part of diagnosis

Data can be combined with code status, electrical measurements, actuator tests and the driver’s description. It may narrow the likely cause or show that a suspected circuit is behaving normally. Not every module exposes the same information, and some faults only appear under conditions that cannot be safely reproduced during a visit.

The objective is not to display the largest possible list of values. It is to select relevant information, understand what it means and use it to guide the next test.
