What is a car diagnostic test?

It is an assessment of a vehicle fault using relevant information such as symptoms, control-module fault codes, live data and targeted electrical or functional tests. The exact checks depend on the problem.

Is reading fault codes the same as diagnosing the fault?

No. Reading codes reveals what the control module recorded. Diagnosis investigates why it recorded that condition and whether the evidence supports a component, wiring, supply, mechanical or operating problem.

Can you diagnose my car at my home or workplace?

Yes. This is a mobile diagnostic service for Sunderland and nearby areas. The vehicle must be in a safe, suitable place with enough access, and visits depend on availability.

What information should I provide before booking?

Send the make, model, year, registration if known, location/postcode, exact symptoms, dashboard messages, whether the vehicle starts and any recent repair or battery history.

Can you diagnose a car that will not start?

Yes, a mobile visit can investigate no-crank, slow-crank and crank-no-start conditions. Possible checks depend on what the vehicle does during an attempted start. Some cases may require further mechanical or workshop-based testing.

Can you diagnose an engine warning light?

Yes. The warning, trouble codes, symptoms and relevant live data can be investigated. A code alone does not confirm which part, if any, has failed.

Why is my engine management light on?

The light comes on when the engine ECU detects a circuit, signal, communication or operating condition outside its expected limits. The cause may involve a sensor, wiring, air or exhaust conditions, voltage supply or another system. Reading the stored code identifies where investigation should begin, not automatically which part to replace.

Can a diagnostic machine tell exactly what is wrong with my car?

Not by itself. A diagnostic tool can read codes, live values and module information, but those results must be interpreted against the symptoms and supported by relevant tests. The machine provides evidence; diagnosis determines what that evidence means.

My car has no fault codes but still has a problem — can it be diagnosed?

Potentially, yes. Not every fault meets the conditions needed to store a code. The symptom may still be investigated using live data, electrical measurements, visual checks and comparison of module inputs or requested-versus-actual values. Intermittent faults may need to occur during testing.

Can you diagnose ABS and airbag warning lights?

Diagnostic investigation is available for ABS, traction, stability and SRS/airbag warnings. This does not include airbag repair or handling of pyrotechnic components.

What can cause ABS or airbag/SRS warning lights?

An ABS warning may relate to wheel-speed information, wiring, voltage, brake-switch data, a control module or another chassis-system input. An SRS warning may relate to an electrical circuit, supply voltage, seat or belt input, occupant-detection information or module communication. The stored code and relevant tests are needed before drawing a conclusion.

Can you diagnose electrical faults?

Electrical diagnostics can investigate relevant voltage supplies, grounds, wiring, fuse failures, module communication and intermittent or battery-drain concerns where appropriate.

Can you diagnose intermittent electrical faults?

Intermittent faults can be investigated, but they are easiest to confirm when the symptom is present. Details such as temperature, weather, journey length and which equipment was operating can help. Some cases require monitoring or a later test when the fault reappears.

Can you diagnose CAN bus or module communication faults?

Relevant modules can be scanned for communication DTCs and checked for network availability, supply voltage and grounds where accessible. A communication code does not automatically mean a module has failed; low voltage, wiring, connectors or another module on the network can also affect communication.

Can a weak battery cause multiple warning lights?

Yes. Low voltage during starting or a discharged battery can cause several control modules to record supply or communication faults at the same time. Battery, starting and charging behaviour should be assessed before assuming that several unrelated modules have failed.

Can you diagnose DPF problems without immediately forcing a regeneration?

Yes. A DPF warning can be investigated using codes, differential-pressure readings, temperature data, calculated loading and regeneration conditions. A forced regeneration is not the correct automatic response if another fault prevents regeneration or a sensor reading is implausible.

Can live data help find a fault?

Yes. Live data can show temperatures, pressures, voltages, RPM, switch states, module inputs and requested-versus-actual values. Comparing related values can reveal an implausible sensor, missing response or operating condition that a stored code alone does not explain.

Do you clear fault codes?

Codes may be cleared when it supports confirmation testing or after information has been recorded. Clearing does not repair the cause, and an unresolved fault will usually return.

Does a fault code tell you exactly which part needs replacing?

Usually not. It identifies a detected system, circuit or condition. The named component may be involved, but wiring, power, grounds, another system or the conditions affecting the reading may be responsible.

Can every fault be diagnosed during one visit?

No. Intermittent faults, faults requiring extended monitoring, difficult access, dismantling or specialist workshop tests may need more than one stage. Findings and limitations will be explained.

How long does vehicle diagnosis take?

There is no reliable fixed time for every fault. The time depends on the symptoms, how many systems are involved, whether the fault is present and which tests are required. A code scan is quick; confirming why a code or symptom exists can take longer.

What happens after the diagnostic inspection?

The available findings and likely next steps are explained. That may be a targeted repair, further testing, monitoring an intermittent issue or taking the vehicle to an appropriate repairer.

Can you test an ECU?

Diagnostic checks can assess ECU communication, power and grounds, relevant sensor-to-ECU signals and whether the module is controlling supported outputs. No single scan result proves an ECU has failed. If the evidence points to an internal control-module problem, separate specialist testing, repair or cloning may need to be discussed.
